Language test
At the École du Louvre, students are offered just one language (no second foreign language).
New students entering the first and second cycles must sit a single language placement test.
Your choice of language commits you to a full course of study; it must therefore be carefully considered.
When making your decision, you should take into account your personal preferences and strengths, as well as your intended area of specialisation and any desire you may have to take part in one of the École’s many international partnerships. (International | École du Louvre)
The École du Louvre offers courses in German, English, Spanish, Italian and French as a foreign language (for non-French-speaking students).
If you wish to start learning a new language (Italian OR German), you must sit a test in a language you have already mastered from among those offered by the School (Italian, Spanish, English or German). This is in case you drop the new language during the course or even during the academic year, or if you are granted an unexpected exemption from attendance for medical reasons, etc.
For Italian beginners, please email [email protected] as soon as possible to register (limited places available).
For students entering the second year of their undergraduate degree, an Arabic language SPOC is offered in partnership with INALCO. If you wish to take this course via distance learning, please indicate this by email to: [email protected]
Students currently enrolled who wish to change their language of study must submit a test in the language they wish to study, along with a letter of motivation explaining the reasons for their request. Changes of language will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
To take your language test in German, English, Spanish or Italian, please go to the following address: https://self-gaia.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/
The test must be taken on this specific server (do not search for the test on Google), on a computer only (no mobile devices), using the Chrome or Firefox browsers (do not use Safari, Edge or any other browser), and in a single sitting.
You will need to create an account and then watch the video tutorial before starting the test by entering the session code:
- Italian session code: elouvreITA26
- English session code: elouvreANG26
- Spanish session code: elouvreESP26
- German session code: elouvreALL26
The test takes approximately 1 hour. It must be completed by 25 July.
For French as a foreign language, please download, save and then complete the document below.
The French as a foreign language test must be returned by 25 July to [email protected].

Language tests for the foundation year
Students in the preparatory class must sit two language tests and send them to [email protected]
The École du Louvre offers courses in German, English, Spanish and Italian. These courses prepare students for both the written and oral examinations. Students wishing to sit these language papers in the entrance examination are invited to enrol on the courses offered by the school. To enable teachers to best assess each student’s needs, applicants for admission to the preparatory class are asked to take the relevant placement tests (regardless of whether you are sitting the language paper in writing or orally; except for English: if you intend to sit the English exam in writing, take the test; if you are sitting it orally, do not take the test – further information will be provided at the start of term).
Agreements are in place with other institutions for Latin and Greek.
The final choice of language courses can be made after the start of term. If you are unsure about which languages to choose for the entrance examination, please feel free to sit as many tests as you wish.
